On the email group some members were sharing about good breakup songs to induce crying which is okay when you need to feel as bad as you really feel. But you don’t want to dwell in it and you don’t want to push yourself into a major depression.
Moving on is about balance, as we know. So after you’ve had a good cry, you need some “I rock” songs to empower you and move on and lift your mood. You should be doing proactive things such as affirmations and positive and empowering self-talk and music helps too.
When I was separated a few months, the ex came over and blathered on about some such nonsense, giving me critical feedback (what else). As he walked out of the house I said, “Keep it to yourself. It’s my life.” and started singing Billy Joel’s “My Life” and it felt so GOOD.
Of course I did the crying jags as well but would pump myself up and empower myself with feel-good-about-me songs.
One of the BEST THINGS I did was make a mix tape of empowering songs and sing them in the car AT THE TOP OF MY LUNGS. WOO HOO.
Some of my favorites (oldies and new ones alike):
I Will Survive by Gloria Gaynor (the mother of all empowerment songs)
I’m Still Standing by Elton John
Fighter by Christina Aguilera (currently my favorite)
Respect Yourself by The Staple Singers
Your Life is Now by John Mellencamp
No More Drama by Mary J. Blige
Warrior by Patti Smythe
Feeling Stronger Every Day by Chicago
When The Heartache is Over by Tina Turner
My Give A Damn’s Busted by Jo Dee Massena
…what else?
Let’s hear some good suggestions for empowerment songs then get all those songs on your Ipods or make a CD for the car or whatever. EMPOWERMENT THROUGH MUSIC. Let’s hear the suggestions.
I only ask that you stay away from that idiot song about taking a baseball bat to someone’s car because he cheated. WRONG. That’s not empowerment, it’s sick revenge and we don’t want to do that. We want healthy messages. :)
So what are good empowerment/getting past a breakup songs??? Let’s hear some suggestions. THEN when you’ve got a bunch you really like, GO MAKE A MIX TAPE/CD/MP3 OF EMPOWERMENT SONGS!
Let’s hear it!!!

Along with the songs you suggested , which are great ones and have helped me through various breakups, some others post breakup empowerment songs I like to listen to (old and new) are:
“Smile” by Lily Allen
“Cry Me A River” by Justin Timberlake
“What Goes Around” by Justin Timberlake
“Karma” by Alicia Keys
“Someday” by Mariah Carey
“That’s Just The Way It Is Baby” by the Rembrandts
“Running Back to You” by Vanessa Williams
“The Sign” by Ace of Base
“Apologize” by One Republic with Timbaland
“Sorry” by Madonna
“Hung Up” by Madonna
“You’ll See” by Madonna
“My Love (You’re Never Gonna Get It)” by En Vogue
“After The Rain” by Nelson
I’ll post more when I think of them. This is a great idea.
And I agree. Baseball bats to your cheating mate’s car will only land you in jail and get you labeled to be a psycho! Not empowering at all.
Lisa Anne
Another one I thought of…
“So Yesterday” by Hillary Duff (probably for teens but still has a good message…lol)
Lisa Anne
Poor Poor Pitiful Me. The original Waren Zevon version, forget Linda Ronstadt’s version.
God Willing
Surrender by Dropkick Murphy’s (Yeah, I’m Irish LOL)
All These Things That I Have Done by the Killers
Supermassive Black Hole by Muse
Bye Bye Baby by The Commitments
Won’t Get Fooled Again by The Who
Hit Me With Your Best Shot Pat Benetar
My favorite breakup person, hands down, is Fiona Apple. I’d recommend “Sleep To Dream” as good rage-freeing/empowering music. Here are the awesome lyrics:
I tell you how I feel, but you dont care.
I say tell me the truth, but you dont dare.
You say love is a hell you cannot bare.
And I say gimme mine back and then go there – for all I care.
I got my feet on the ground and I dont go to sleep to dream.
You got your head in the clouds and youre not at all what you seem.
This mind, this body, and this voice cannot be stifled by your deviant ways.
So dont forget what I told you, dont come around, I got my own hell to raise.
I have never been insulted in all my life.
I could swallow the seas to wash down all this pride.
First you run like a fool just to be at my side.
And now you run like a fool, but you just run to hide, and I cant abide.
I got my feet on the ground and I dont go to sleep to dream.
You got this head in the clouds and youre not at all what you seem.
This mind, this body, and this voice cannot be stifled by your deviant ways.
So dont forget what I told you, dont come around, I got my own hell to raise.
Dont make it a big deal, dont be so sensitive.
Were not playing a game anymore, you dont have to be so defensive.
Dont you plead me your case, dont bother to explain.
Dont even show me your face, cuz its a crying shame.
Just go back to the rock from under which you came.
Take the sorrow you gave and all the stakes you claim -
And dont forget the blame.
I got my feet on the ground and I dont go to sleep to dream.
You got this head in the clouds and youre not at all what you seem.
This mind, this body, and this voice cannot be stifled by your deviant ways.
So dont forget what I told you, dont come around, I got my own hell to raise.
I mentioned this one in the email group. I used it years ago after a breakup.
Here are the lyrics:
“Believe”
After love, after love [repeat]
No matter how hard I try
You keep pushing me aside
And I can’t break through
There’s no talking to you
So sad that you’re leaving
Takes time to believe it
But after all is said and done
You’re going to be the lonely one, Ohh Oh
[CHORUS:]
Do you believe in life after love
I can feel something inside me say
I really don’t think you’re strong enough,
Now
Do you believe in life after love
I can feel something inside me say
I really don’t think you’re strong enough,
Now
What am I supposed to do
Sit around and wait for you
And I can’t do that
There’s no turning back
I need time to move on
I need love to feel strong
‘Cause I’ve had time to think it through
And maybe I’m too good for you Ohh Oh
[CHORUS]
But I know that I’ll get through this
‘Cause I know that I am strong
I don’t need you anymore
Oh I don’t need you anymore I don’t need you anymore
No I don’t need you anymore
SHANIA TWAIN LYRICS
“Nah!”
I thought I might begin by fillin’ you in–
in case you didn’t already know
I’ll never forget how you got up and left
In fact it was downright pretty low
There ain’t no way I wanna,
you know I ain’t gonna
Take you back, so don’t even try
You can beg, you can plead–
you can sweat, you can bleed
Too bad I could care if you cry
That’s it! (That’s all!) We had fun!
(We had a ball!)
It was good while it lasted–
but now I’m past it
(It was sure!) It was sweet!
Sure you swept me off my feet
I miss you now and then,
but would I do it all again–Nah–
[Chorus:]
You won’t find me
Naked and cold justa sittin’
on the doctor’s table
Witin’ to be told justa why
I’m no longer able
To feel my heart beatin’–
give me a good reason why!
I kinda went numb just around
about the time you told me
You were movin’ on, and you
said that you were gonna phone me
It’s been so long, and there
ain’t nothin’ wrong with the line
It’s too late to regret it,
but you’re the one who said it
We’re better off being apart
I hate to be a downer,
but don’t bother comin’ ’round here
‘Cause I won’t have a change of heart
That’s it! (That’s all!) We had fun!
(We had a ball!)
It was good while it lasted–
but now I’m past it
(It was sure!) It was sweet!
Sure you swept me off my feet
I miss you now and then,
but would I do it again–Nah–
[Repeat Chorus]
Nah…
Well, I hope you learned a lesson,
’cause you’ll never be messin’
With my head again the way that you did
It was never gonna work; you were
too much of a jerk
I’m finally fed up with it
That’s it! (That’s all!) We had fun!
(We had a ball!)
It was good while it lasted–
but now I’m past it
(It was sure!) It was sweet!
Sure you swept me off my feet
I miss you now and then,
but would I do it all again–Nah–
[Repeat Chorus]
Nah…

Lyrics to Bye Bye by Jo Dee Messina
Boy you sure look good there standin’ in the doorway in the sunset light
Maybe I read you wrong thinkin’ you could be my Mr. Right
I was puttin’ my heart and soul on the line
Said you needed some time, just a little more time to make up your mind
Well it’s been long enough
Time is up
Bye bye love, I’ll catch you later
Got a lead foot down on my accelerator and the rearview mirror torn off
I ain’t never lookin’ back. And that’s a fact.
I’ve tried all I can imagine
I’ve begged and pleaded in true lover’s fashion
I’ve got pride, I’m takin’ it for a ride
Bye bye, bye bye my baby, bye bye
Don’t think all those tears are gonna hold me here like they’ve done before
You’ll find what’s left of us in a cloud of dust on highway 4
Baby what did you expect me to do
Just sit around and wait on you
Well I’m through watchin’ you just skate around the truth
And I know it sounds trite
I’ve seen the light
Bye bye love, I’ll catch you later
Got a lead foot down on my accelerator and the rearview mirror torn off
‘Cause I ain’t never lookin’ back, and that’s a fact.
I’ve tried all I can imagine
I’ve begged and pleaded in true lover’s fashion
I’ve got pride, I’m takin’ it for a ride
Bye bye, bye bye my baby, bye bye
I’d lost the game I guess
I did my best to win the part
Now I’m leavin’ here with what’s left of my heart.
Bye bye, I’ll catch you later
Got a lead foot down on my accelerator and the rearview mirror torn off
‘Cause I ain’t never lookin’ back.
You can count on that.
I’ve tried all I can imagine
I’ve begged and pleaded in true lover’s fashion
I’ve got pride, I’m takin’ it for a ride
Bye bye, bye bye my baby, bye bye
Bye bye
Ooh baby
Oh oh
Bye bye, bye bye my baby, bye bye

Shayna Zaid = Take your Time ; she’s an new artist but google it and check her out, beautiful voice and this song has truly empowered me.
Other great ones:
Alicia Keys – Lesson Learned
John Mayer – I’m gonna find another you
Brandon Heath
I wish you could see me now
I wish I could show you how
I’m not who i was
Used to be mad at you
A little on the hurt-side too
But i’m not who I was
Found my way around
To foriving you, sometime ago
But I never got to tell you
So..
I found us in a photograph
Saw me and I had to laugh
You know, I’m not who I was
Ooo, there you were right above me
And I wonder if you ever loved me
Just for who i was
When the pain came back again
Like a bitter friend
It was all that I could do
To keep myself from blaming you
Ooo..
Thinking that it’s a funny thing
Figured out I can sing
Now I’m not who i was
I write about love and such
Maybe because I want it so much
I’m not who i was
I was thinkin’ maybe I,
Should let you know
That I am not the same
But I never did forget your name
Hello
Ooo, a-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah-nah
But the thing that I find most amazing,
The amazing grace
Is the chance to give it up
Maybe that’s what love is all about
I wish you could see me now
I wish I could show you how
I’m not who i was
Rob,
In my opinion, that song is too nostalgic and about “her” or her opinion of you. Try to make yourself listen to more empowering songs
that are all about YOU. You and healing, you and moving on, you and your fabulous life.
You don’t have to believe it all yet, but if you listen to empowering messages through song, it will help you get there faster than songs like the one above.
My observation is meant as encouragement, not judgment.
It’s all about empowerment :)
thanks :)
i guess, that is true… it can be taken a lot of ways…
To me it also talks about how i am growing and changing and becoming a better me… its ok to remember the good times… but look at me… i am different than who i was.. and i like it… :) i am not the dysfunctional person who i was… and I am getting better. I guess you are right too, I just started tearing up writing that ..
Also, It was written by a popular Christian singer… so i really think the context is more between God, Jesus and us…. but i haven’t really figured it out yet… i do like the song a lot…
thank you again… its interesting to hear what other people think too.
Hey, Rob, I didn’t see the song from that perspective (between the person who’s changed and God). That makes sense and is positive; thanks for showing me how to see it another way. :)
Ok here is another one
Matthew West, History
Its been a bad day, you’ve been looking back
And all you can see is everything you wish you could take back
All your mistakes, a world of regrets
All of those moments you would rather forget
I know it’s hard to believe
Let me refresh your memory
Chorus:
Yesterday is history
And history is miles away
So leave it all behind you
Let it always remind you of the day
The day that love made history
You know you can’t stay right where you fell
The hardest part is forgiving yourself
But let’s take a walk into today
And don’t let your past get in the way
Repeat chorus
Yeah Yeah
Would you believe that you are history
In the making, in the making
Every choice that you are making
Every step that you are taking
Every chain that you are breaking
History is in the making
Every word that you are saying
Every prayer that you are praying
Every chain that you are breaking
History is in the making
History is in the making
History is in the making
Repeat chorus
Yeah yeah
Oh history is in the making
Every word that you are saying
Every prayer that you are praying
Every chain that you are breaking
History is in the making
History is in the making
History is in the making
I just love this song. Every time I hear it I feel good.
“It’s a Great Day to be Alive” by Travis Tritt
I got rice cooking in the microwave
Got a three day beard I don’t plan to shave
And it’s a goofy thing but I just gotta say
Hey I’m doing alright
Yeah I think I’ll make me some homemade soup
Feelin pretty good and that’s the truth
It’s neither drink nor drug induced
No I’m just doin alright
And it’s a great day to be alive
I know the sun’s still shinin when I close my eyes
There’s some hard times in the neigborhood
But why can’t every day be just this good?
It’s been fifteen years since I left home
Said good luck to every seed I’d sown
Give it my best and then I left it alone
Oh…I hope their doin alright
Now I look in the mirror and what do I see?
A lone wolf there starin back at me
Long in the tooth but harmless as can be
Lord I guess he’s doin alright
And it’s a great day to be alive
I know the sun’s still shinin when I close my eyes
There’s some hard times in the neigborhood
But why can’t every day be just this good?
Sometimes it’s lonely
Sometimes it’s only me
And the shadows that fill this room
Sometimes I’m fallin
Desperately callin
Howlin at the moon…
Ahwoo!
Ahwoo!
Well I might go get me a new tattoo
Or take my old Harley for a three day cruise
Might even grow me a Fu Man Chu…
Oh Aww!
And it’s a great day to be alive
I know the sun’s still shinin when I close my eyes
There’s some hard times in the neigborhood
But why can’t every day be just this good?
And it’s a great day to be alive
I know the sun’s still shinin when I close my eyes
There’s some hard times in the neigborhood
But why can’t every day be just this good?
Almost any song by India Irie (sp?) will do the trick!
The newest song for me is “Over You” by Daughtry. Very powerful. It helps me elavate my healing process everytime I hear it.
HEAL OVER
It isn’t very difficult to see why
You are the way you are
Doesn’t take a genius to realise
That sometimes life is hard
It’s gonna take time
But you’ll just have to wait
You’re gonna be fine
But in the meantime
Come over here lady
Let me wipe your tears away
Come a little nearer baby
Coz you’ll heal over
Heal over
Heal over someday
And I don’t wanna hear you tell yourself
That these feelings are in the past
You know it doesn’t mean they’re off the shelf
Because pain’s built to last
Everybody sails alone
But we can travel side by side
Even if you fail
You know that no one really minds
Come over here lady
Don’t hold on but don’t let go
I know it’s so hard
You’ve got to try to trust yourself
I know it’s so hard, so hard
Come over here lady
Let me wipe your tears away
Come a little nearer baby
Coz you’ll heal over, heal over, heal over someday
by KT Tunstall
This song was a soother for me when I was feeling at my lowest. It’s as if my mother was singing to me, just made me feel better.
Alanis Morrisette – “Thank You” and “Hands Clean”
Beatles – “Let It Be”
Bif Naked – “Tango Shoes” and “I Love Myself Today”
Bjork – “Army of Me” and “Innocence”
Natasha Bedingfield – “Unwritten”
Pink “Just Like A Pill”
Tom Petty “I Won’t Back Down”
Hello there,
so here are my favourite songs (broken up one month ago, relationship of over 5 years):
- Icey Waters by Adrian Crowley (Irish singer-songwriter)
- Time is on my Side by Muddy Waters
- Sick & tired by Anastacia
- All cried out by Alison Moyet
- I got life by Nina Simone
- Power of Goodbye by Madonna
- Come a Long Way by Michelle Shocked
- Better Days by Bruce Springsteen
- I love men by Eartha Kitt
- Sugar Boy by Beth Orton
- I’m a good woman by Jean Knight & Barbara Lynn
I must say I truly got back into touch with music, which I always loved anyway but didnt pursue that much during the rollercoaster of my relationship.
I know this is an old thread, but I just have to add my favorite to the list. “I Will Not Be Broken” by Bonnie Raitt. I LOVE Bonnie. She has a song for almost every mood and this one is really helping me deal with a dysfunctional relationship that I’m trying to get over.
Kelly Clarkson ~ Since Youve Been Gone
Here’s the thing we started off friends
It was cool but it was all pretend
Yeah yeah
Since you’ve been gone
You dedicated you took the time
Wasn’t long till I called you mine
Yeah Yeah
Since you’ve been gone
And all you’d ever hear me say
Is how I pictured me with you
That’s all you’d ever hear me say
But since you’ve been gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get
What I want
Since you’ve been gone
How can I put it? you put me on
I even fell for that stupid love song
Yeah yeah
Since you’ve been gone
How come I never hear you say
I just wanna be with you
I guess you never felt that way
But since you’ve been gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you
Now I get
I get what I want
Since you’ve been gone
You had your chance you blew it
Out of sight, out of mind
Shut your mouth I just can’t take it
Again and again and again and again
Since you’ve been gone
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you)
Now I get
I get what I want
I can breathe for the first time
Im so movin on
Yeah yeah
Thanks to you (thanks to you)
Now I get (I get)
You should know (you should know)
That I get
I get what I want
Since you’ve been gone
Since you’ve been gone
Since you’ve been gone
“shut your mouth, I just cant take it”
I LOVE that part….I finally get to stop listening to all his craziness, his rationalizations, lies and manipulation!!!!!
SHUT YOUR MOUTH!!!
Oh, more suggestions (this thread is fun, so I had to jump in again.)
Happy calming music of any type is great. Bob Marley always calms me right down if I’m having a bad time. The Fugees also did a really great cover of “No Woman No Cry.” Michael Franti, Neil Young and/or Jack Johnson always makes me feel calm/good as well.
Lauryn Hill – “That Thing”
Great Big Sea – anything really, but “Ordinary Day” is really good
Bjork – “All is Full of Love”. Great song, it’s about love being in so many places other than in a relationship (I think, anyway.)
Celine Dion “A New Day Has Come”
Dixie Chicks “Not Ready to Make Nice”, “Goodbye Earl”, and “Taking the Long Way Around”
Madonna “Express Yourself”, “Ray of Light”
Rolling Stones “You Can’t Always Get What you Want”
Another thing I used to do post-breakup, if I was driving and a sappy love song came on the radio, was to think of it as me singing those lyrics to myself. Sounds kinda corny, but it made me feel better. I love music, so this was kinda a nice self-care thing, like affirmations but with a good tune.
I felt like I’d spent most of my life thinking those kinds of thoughts about partners who, based on how they treated me, didn’t really deserve that kind of love and devotion. It was a way to get those “I love you and will never abandon you, I will always treat you well” sorts of messages through my head.
At the top of my list for this particular tactic? Alicia Keys “No One”. Great song, it’s actually one of my favorites now.
I love Goodbye Earl
This is a fun thread, I know it is old,..but…
Kelly Clarkson ~ Never Again
( I am not a hge fan of hers but I like the way she says things…)
I hope the ring you gave to her turns her finger green
I hope when your in bed with her, you think of me
I would never wish bad things, but i don’t wish you well
Could you tell, by the flames that burned your words
I never read your letter
‘Cos i knew what you’d say
Give me that sunday school answer
Try and make it all ok
[Chorus]
Does it hurt to know I’ll never be there
Bet it sucks, seeing my face everywhere
It was you, who just ended like you did
I was the last to know you knew
Exactly what you would do
It don’t say, you simply lost your way
She may believe you but i never will
Never again
If she really knows the truth, she deserves you
A trophy wife, oh how cute
Ignorance is bliss
But When your day comes and he’s through with you
And he’ll be through with you
You’ll die together but alone
You wrote me in a letter
You couldn’t say it right to my face
Give me that sunday school answer
Repent yourself away
[Chorus]
Does it hurt to know I’ll never be there
Bet it sucks, seeing my face everywhere
It was you, who chose to end like you did
I was the last to know you knew
Exactly what you would do
It don’t say, you simply lost your way
She may believe you but i never will
Never again
[Bridge]
Never again will i hear you
Never again will i miss you
Never again will i fall to you
Never
Never again will i kiss you
Never again will i want to
Never again will i love you
Never
[Chorus]
Does it hurt to know I’ll never be there
Bet it sucks, seeing my face everywhere
It was you, who chose to end like you did
I was the last to know you knew
Exactly what you would do
It don’t say, you simply lost your way
They may believe you but i never will
I never will
I never will
Never again
Nikki,
“I hope the ring you gave to her turns her finger green”??
That’s hilarious! :-) (sorry, I could not resist, it really sounded funny, though it’s probably not a funny song)
Greenroses
hehe
listen to the song…it isnt as funny as it sounds, but when I read the words after hearing the song I was like “what???”
I know it sounds funny lol :)
This is my very first post on this site, but I’ve been reading it for several weeks and it is really supportive, straight talking and informative. I think this is a terrific thread and I hope it continues. Great suggestions!
Beautiful – Christina Aguilera
I’m not gon’ cry – Mary J Blige
wow.. this is cheering me up. My favourite has to be Aimee Mann.
These songs here…
Deathly
How Am I different
And this one, I’ll put the lyrics in: Deathly
Now that Ive met you
Would you object to
Never seeing each other again
Cause I cant afford to
Climb aboard you
No ones got that much ego to spend
So dont work your stuff
Because Ive got troubles enough
No, dont pick on me
When one act of kindness could be
Deathly
Deathly
Definitely
Cause Im just a problem
For you to solve and
Watch dissolve in the heat of your charm
But what will you do when
You run it through and
You cant get me back on the farm
So dont work your stuff
Because Ive got troubles enough
No, dont pick on me
When one act of kindness could be
Deathly
Deathly
Definitely
Youre on your honor
Cause Im a goner
And you havent even begun
So do me a favor
If I should waver
Be my savior
And get out the gun
Just dont work your stuff
Because Ive got troubles enough
No, dont pick on me
When one act of kindness could be
Deathly
Deathly
Definitely
Her songs are particularly good if you’re co-dependent (which I am!) and you want to get out of a bad relationship.
and sorry to double-post, this is another one for all the co-dependents out there ;)
Another Aimee Mann song, not so much empowerment, but if you’re trying to remind yourself not to make the same mistakes again, this one is great. It’s about someone’s putting their partner’s needs first to their own detriment, I intend to listen as a reminder not to be a fool again…. “You Do”
You stay the night at his house
with no ride to work
and I’m the one who tells you
he’s another jerk
but you’re the one who can succeed
you’ve only got to prove your need–
and you do
you really do
The sex you’re trading up for
what you hope is love
is just another thing that
he’ll be careless of
but though there are caveats galore
you’ve only got to love him more–
and you do
you really do
even when it’s all too clear
You write a little note that
you leave on the bed
and spend some time dissecting
every word he said
and if he seemed a little strange
well, baby–anyone can change
and you do
you do
you really do
I’ve been listening to “Never Again” as mentioned above and “Rise Above This” by Seether.
“I Don’t Care” by Apocalyptica
okay, this thread is a little old but i feel like adding to it anyway.
i have a slightly different idea of empowerment than a lot. if i can relate to a song on any level… it usually gives me a feeling to push past through everything because someone else knows the same pains. anyway, here’s some of my personal empowerment songs
white snake – here i go again
bon jovi – its my life
mudvayne – happy
mudvayne – forget to remember
cold – suffocate
cold – wasted years (kinda sad and melodic but makes you think about life and want to change it)
112 – love you like i did
akon – journey
atmosphere – say hey there
everlast – today (watch me shine)
broken like an angel (either dollybraid or crossfade… not sure. but the video for dollybraid is good)
drowning pool – tear away
halestorm – its not you
halestorm – bet you wish you had me back
journey – don’t stop believin
kansas – carry on my wayword son
lynyrd skynyrd – freebird (surprised this wasn’t on here already. not only a classic road song, but also one that suggest just living life)
lynyrd skynyrd – simple man
metallica – wherever i may roam (*shrugs* makes me feel empowered lol)
mudvayne – world so cold
mudvayne – f***ing determined
